ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY
General or spinal anesthesia is used for ACL surgery
- general anesthetic will relax your muscles and make you feel as if you are in a deep sleep
- spinal anesthetic leaves you awake, but unable to feel anything from the waist down.
The graft is prepared by your physician. An incision will be made 1 to 3 inches below your kneecap. The torn ACL will be removed with an arthroscope, which is a small thin tube through which your doctor can view the inside of your knee joint. Various thin, small instruments are used to perform the surgery throught the arthroscope.
Holes wil be drilled in your femur and tibia (see illustration below) where the graft will be attached. The graft is passed throught the holes, and then anchored in place by screws or staples. The incision from the graft site is closed with stitches, tape, or staples.
